The ladder

Hints walk down the list of 5,000 words. Each step is closer than the one before it. If you already guessed that word, the button skips to the next step.

Read the category, not the synonym

A hint at rank 1,200 is related, not adjacent. If that word is towel, the secret may be a fabric, a bathroom object, or a cleaning verb. Guessing only synonyms of towel burns guesses that all land in the same band. Name the category once, then a property of it, then a specific object.

Spend the first hint when your best rank is still above a few hundred and new guesses are not moving it. Save the ranks at 40 and 12 for the moment the board is already inside one topic. Measured openers that pull the first rank down are listed under Contexto starting words.

Does a hint reveal the secret word?

No. A hint reveals the word that already sits at a published rank. Rank 1 stays hidden until you guess it or give up.
